the ruins of the second largest castle in Slovakia stand atop a steep ridge. Lietava Castle was built at the start of the 13th century and became one of the largest in Slovakia. In the middle ages it controlled a large area and was considered impregnable. It resisted all attacks by the Turks. It was abandoned after the family that owned it died out in the 17th century. The castle is currently cared for by volunteers who carry out preservation work. Entry to the castle is at visitors’ own risk.
