Church and monastery of the Virgin Mary Kláštor pod Znievom

When King Bella IV approved the foundation of a Premonstratensian monastery, Kláštor pod Znievom became one of the most important religious and educational centres of its day in the Kingdom of Hungary. The monastery became the seat of a provost and functioned as a place of authentication (Latin: “locus credibilis”), rather like a modern notary. It is now a home for people in need of social assistance, who work on the building’s renovation under the leadership of the local priest. In front of the monastery is a 155-year-old lime tree.
